A PDO thread facelift is a minimally invasive treatment that lifts and tightens your skin, giving you a more youthful appearance. This advanced procedure is among the services offered by Syed Bokhari, MD, of The Beauty Medics in Riverside, California.
Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are a type of biodegradable polyester suture. They’ve been in use since the 1980s to assist in surgical procedures. Considerable research shows that PDO threads break down harmlessly in your body after around six months.
There are different types of PDO threads to choose from. Some have a smooth surface, while others are covered in tiny barbs that help grasp your tissue and enhance the lifting effect. Some threads are intertwined to provide additional lifting effects in sunken facial areas.
A PDO thread facelift, often called a thread lift, works by inserting PDO thread in areas of the face where a lifting and tightening effect is desired.
On the day of your procedure, your skin is disinfected before a member of The Beauty Medics team injects it with numbing medication. Once you’re numb, Dr. Bokhari makes a very small incision to place a thin medical tube called a cannula into the treatment area.
The PDO thread is within the cannula, so once the tubing is in the proper position, Dr. Bokhari gently removes the cannula, leaving the thread in place. He then trims away the end of the thread and bandages the area.
PDO thread facelifts are done on an outpatient basis. You’ll be able to go home after your procedure and will need to take care to avoid placing any pressure on your face for a few weeks afterward.
Your results will last anywhere from 1-4 years. Over time, the PDO threads dissolve and are absorbed and processed by your body. The immediate lifting effects will slowly fade as the threads break down.
However, your body responds to the placement of PDO threads by creating new collagen cells. Those cells will plump and tighten your skin, effects that will last long after the actual PDO threads are gone. That’s why PDO thread facelifts are popular and the most powerful anti-aging treatment you can get outside of plastic surgery.
